The Jury

The jury consists of three Danish and two non-Danish adjudicators:

  • John Høybye, Denmark, is a choirmaster and composer who has worked with many and various choirs and ensembles – from beginners’ and children’s choirs to top professional choirs and orchestras, including the Danish National Radio Choir, the Hungarian National Radio Choir, the Symphony Orchestras of Aarhus, Aalborg, and Zealand and Radio Denmark’s Big Band. As a composer he has worked primarily in the borderland between classical and rhythmic music. In 1993 John Høybye was elected Choral Composer of the Year in honour of the breadth and the quality of his compositions, and in 1999 he was awarded the Danish Composers’ Society annual prize. John also composed the set work for the 2nd International Choir Festival in Randers in 2005
  • Steen Lindholm, Denmark, is a well-known name on the international choir scene. He has conducted at major choral festivals such as Europa Cantat, Nordklang, Amerika Fest and the Hong Kong Children’s Choir Festival. He has directed a number of national radio choirs and held Master Classes and concerts in many parts of the world, including the USA, Canada, South Korea, China, Argentina, and all the Nordic countries. In Denmark Steen Lindholm has been a permanent conductor of various choirs, including the Copenhagen Concert Choir and the Danish Boys’ Choir. Steen Lindholm has been a jury member at international choral festivals all over the world, while in Denmark he has been jury president for the Youth Choirs Festival in Kalundborg and for our own choir festival here in Randers.  
  • Carsten Seyer-Hansen, Denmark, holds an MA in Musicology and Philosophy from the University of Aarhus. He teaches Choir and Ensemble Direction at the Royal Academy of Music, Aarhus. Since 2003 he has been cantor at Aarhus Cathedral. He has also attended a Master Class with the German conductor, Frieder Bernius. As choir director Carsten Seyer-Hansen has founded a number of choirs in Aarhus, including Aarhus University Choir (1995), vocal ensemble Concert Clemens (1997) and Skt. Clemens Boys’ Choir (2003). At the 3rd International Choir Festival in Randers in 2009 Carsten and his choir Concert Clemens won not only First Prize in the Chamber Choir competition but also the Grand Prix.  
  • Robert Sund, Sweden, sings, arranges, composes and conducts. His many talents have made him a central figure in Swedish and international music. He has conducted and been artistic leader of a number of choirs including ”Orphei Dränger”. With another of his choirs, Robert Sund’s Chamber Choir, he won 1st Prize and the Grand Prix at the 2nd International Choir Festival in Randers in 2005. As a teacher, lecturer, and guest conductor Robert Sund has been active in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America and has been a jury member at choir competitions in most parts of the world. In 1993 he was named Conductor of the Year by the Association of Swedish Choirmasters.  
  • John Haberlen, USA, is Professor of Music, and directed the School of Music at Georgia State University from 1996 to 2007. He began his professional career at the age of 16 as a percussionist in The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, and has since divided his talents between research, making music, and administrating. As President of the American Choral Directors’ Association he was for many years at the head of some 22,000 American choir leaders. His debut as a conductor at Carnegie Hall in 1990, with a performance of Poulenc’s ”Gloria”, was followed by a series of conducting engagements in the USA and Europe, and he is in demand as a jury member at international choir competitions throughout the world.

The Composer of this year's compulsory work

  • Jakob Lorentzen, Denmark, has been organist and cantor at Holmens Church as well as organist at Christiansborg Slotskirke, Copenhagen since 1997. He is choirmaster of Holmens Kantori and conductor of Holmens Baroque Ensemble. Both as conductor and accompanist he works closely with the Danish National Girls Choir, the vocal ensemble Ars Nova Copenhagen, and the DR Underholdningsorkestret. He is also linked to the Royal Danish Academy of Music, where he teaches Ensemble Singing, and to the Jutland Academy of Music, where he teaches Organ Improvisation. As a composer Jakob Lorentzen has written mainly choral works and organ works. These include ” Korvers til kirkeåret” (Choruses for the Church Year) for Mixed Choir a cappella (2003) and ”L’enfant mourant” (The Dying Child) for Equal Voices, Tubular Bells and Organ (2008).
