COMPETITION RULES
1. Only amateur choirs may compete. Choirs may, however, be conducted by professional conductors, or accompanied by professional organists (liturgical part of the competition) or instrumentalists (Rhythmic choirs).
2. Singers may not sing in more than one choir.
3. Choirs may compete in a maximum of two categories.
4. In the Mixed choir, Chamber Choir, Youth Choir and Children’s Choir categories, the competition is divided into two sections: liturgical and secular. All works must be performed either a cappella or accompanied by organ (liturgical works only). In the Rhythmic Choir category, the competition consists of only one part.
5. All choirs must sing the set work specially composed for the occasion by Jakob Lorenzen. In the Mixed Choir, Chamber Choir, Youth Choir and Children’s Choir categories there are two compulsory works: one secular and one liturgical. Youth Choirs, equal voices (S+A) sing the same set work as Children’s Choirs. Mixed Choirs (S+A+T+B) and Youth Choirs may choose between the set work categories of Mixed Choir and Chamber Choir. The remainder of each choir’s programme may be freely chosen, but must include:
one work by a Danish composer in each section.
one or more works composed after 1900 in each section.
6. The freely chosen part of the programme must have a total length of min. 7 and max. 10 minutes effective singing time. Choirs are not required to sing works from specific musical periods. Choirs may bepenalised for exceeding their allotted time.
7. In the Rhythmic Choir category there is only one compulsory work. The remainder of the programme may be freely chosen, and may include one or more works to be instrumentally accompanied (amplification will be provided). The freely chosen part of the programme must have a total length of min. 14 and max. 20 minutes effective singing time.
8. Works may be performed in any order. However, the festival secretariat must be informed of the order of performance no later than one week prior to the start of the festival.
9. All choirs have the possibility of participating in a Folk-music section of the festival, based on the musical traditions of their own country/region. The Folk-music section is external to the competition. Each choir can present a programme of c.15 minutes.
10. Accommodation can be provided free of charge in local schools. Choirs are requested to bring their own mattresses/underlays and sleeping-bags. Mattresses can also be hired. Other forms of accommodation are at a choir’s own expense. The cost of meals during the festival is a total of 75
